Diaspora Voices Cymru did not begin with a boardroom, a strategy document, or a grand launch.
It began shortly after COVID, with five friends sitting together, carrying stories they had held in silence for too long.
They spoke about the hidden weight of starting again in a new country. The loneliness behind the smile. The pain of being highly skilled but unseen. The trauma of leaving home, family, status, and certainty behind.
They spoke about identity, belonging, rejection, racism, grief, hope, and survival.
At first, it was simply a safe space — a place to breathe.
No one came to perform strength. No one came to pretend everything was fine. They came as they were: tired, hopeful, wounded, and resilient.
And as each person shared, something powerful happened. The burden became lighter. Shame began to lose its grip. Pain became language. Language became healing.
What started with five people gradually became ten. Then fifty. Then multiplied.
People came because they had heard there was a space where their story would not be dismissed, corrected, or judged. A space where they could say, “this happened to me,” and hear someone respond, “you are not alone.”
From those early gatherings, one truth became clear: our stories were not just stories. They were bridges. They were medicine. They were evidence. They were power.
Diaspora Voices Cymru was born from that truth.
Today, it has grown into a registered Community Interest Company created to amplify diaspora voices, build belonging, strengthen wellbeing, and connect lived experience to real social impact.
What began as five friends sharing pain has become a growing community of voices turning survival into strength, and stories into change.
